Who needs enemies when you have family?
When retired professor Serebryakov returns to his Russian country estate for a summer visit with beautiful second wife Yelena, the lives of all around him are thrown into turmoil and their humdrum existence is shattered forever. Those most affected are Sonya, the professor's daughter from his first marriage, and her Uncle Vanya, a middle-aged man in a crisis of values.
Personal and professional jealousies abound and passions run high, compounded by idle intrigues of unrequited love. Throw in a tea-pouring, wisdom spouting nanny, a doctor on permanent house call, mix with a dash of vodka and you have the recipe for this classic tragicomic and poignant story about thwarted ambition and enduing hope.
While the characters themselves may lead melancholy lives, the audience derives much pleasure from observing petty family squabbles as they spiral out of control, not to mention some erroneous amourous assumptions that provide the play's most amusing moments.
Mick Gordon is no stranger to the work of Brian Friel, having directed the Lyric's acclaimed productions of Dancing at Lughnasa and The Home Place
